Fashion News: Even more risk seen from body dysmorphic disorder

on Friday, 8 June 2012

Yes, the Kardashians are making news again, but first there's something unrelated but more significant to mention:
A new study shows that people with body dysmorphic disorder -- meaning they think something about their appearance is flawed when it isn't -- are at higher risk of suicide. This adds one more dimension to the ongoing conversation about the unrealistic ideals created by  digitally altered photos, underweight models and the like in fashion editorial spreads and advertising. [Huffington Post]
One might wonder whether fashion designer Marc Jacobs has a bit of body dysmorphic disorder. In an interview with a German magazine he reportedly said he thinks it is impossible to reach perfection:  "There's always something to do. I mean, I keep adding tattoos and piercings, and all sorts of stuff, and I don't know, maybe, who knows what I'll do in the future, but I'd like to think I'm not done," he is quoted as saying. [The Cut]
Now, back to the Kardashian sisters.  Kim, Khloe and Kourtney plan to launch a makeup line in time for the holiday season this year. It will be called Khroma Beauty and include cleverly named pieces such as a Kardazzle Compact. (Is it strange that they're spelling "compact" with a "c"?) [Styleite]
Forget the recent angst about Ann Romney's expensive ($990) Reed Krakoff blouse. Writer Katherine Boyle, in the Washington Post, points out a "symbiotic relationship developing between the Obama campaign, with its style-conscious first lady who dons a wide variety of American designers, and a deep-pocketed, largely Democratic fashion industry, which has been increasingly coordinating its support of Obama." [Washington Post]
EBay is hitting the road this summer with its "Selling Style Tour," essentially pop-up shops in cities across the country where members of its Chic Squad will offer advice and also some lessons in how to sell things on eBay. First up, New York this weekend where Brad Goreski will be doling out advice.  (The tour is scheduled to hit Los Angeles July 13 and 14, location to be determined.) [Styleite]
Jessica Chastain has been named the celebrity brand ambassador for the new Yves Saint Laurent fragrance Manifesto, due to go on sale at the end of August. [WWD] (Subscription required.)
A couple of more films are in the works about the late Yves Saint Laurent, who was the subject of the documentary “L’Amour Fou,” which shined a light on his life with businessman Pierre Bergé and Bergé's response to his death. One of the new films reportedly has  Bergé's approval; the other doesn't. [WWD] (Subscription required.)
